I've worn a boonie hat for years! Great for keeping the sun and rain off your head/face. Wide brim. Short brimmed, tiger striped, woodland, OD, etc… A hat for all occasions.
Buy sometimes the “floppy” part of it gets in the way when behind an optic or gets caught when wearing a large pack. So what can you do? Here is an easy DIY modification that you can do. All it requires is a boonie hat, some pliable wire, and a pair of pliers/multitool.
The point here is to add a pliable stiffener to the outside seam of the brim that can be molded to suit your face or needs.
Start by finding the seam on the brim of your boonie…
Then take one end of your wire and fold it over to create a smooth edge for feeding into that seam…
Next insert the above mentioned end into the seam and start feeding it through…
Once you get the wire all the way around then cut the other end of wire. Leave enough to give an inch or two of overlap in the seam. Fold that end back as you did the first. Doing so prevent the ends from eventually tearing through the seam.
Next push the end all the way though so it does not work its way back out. Then shape the brim to your desired shape and go wear it.
Add a quick stitch to the front crown to drop it a bit and pin up the neck cord on the back with a pin off one of your bandoliers (you do have bandoliers) and you're all set…
I bought 4 new ones this summer. My old 1985 woodland was falling apart. So i have OD, Tiger, Woodland, i. Standard brim, and a Marpat in wide brim. The wide brim gets in the way all the time, the other ones not so much
