The BCA Minuteman Mk12/.22lr SPR Build
The ultimate small game getter...
Several months ago I set out to put together an SPR build, but for my son to use out at our camp. The idea was to build out a .22 platform to maximize the distance available out at the camp range of 275 yards. Plus it could double for dispatching small game such as squirrels, groundhogs, raccoons, and even coyotes. So we got to work putting the parts together.
One of the main things I wanted was a heavy barreled .22 upper (for better accuracy for .22) to mate to a Mil Spec AR lower. I also wanted the benefit of an MPVO and a piggybacked red dot to maximize use in the field.
Build List (w/links)…
Lower: Bear Creek Arsenal Multi-Caliber Forged Lower
Upper: Bear Creek Arsenal .22 LR Right Side Charging Upper | 16" Parkerized Heavy Barrel
Optics: Centerpoint 3-9x40 Rimfire Scope
CVLife Wolf Covert RMR Red Dot
Vertical Foregrip: BCM M-LOK Vertical Grip
Bipod: CVLife Adjustable Bipod
Faux Suppressor: Faux Can Muzzle Brake
Magazines: Black Dog .22lr magazine
On the BCA upper we opted for a side charging setup. This has a few benefits including charging from a prone position, ease of clearing malfunctions, and familiarity with our other .22 rifles.
As with most .22’s when going for accuracy ammo choices matter and after much testing we found that CCi Mini-Mags and CCi’s AR Tactical .22lr gave us the best and most reliable accuracy results.
Mounting the RMR Red Dot on top gives us the added benefit for quick shooting in the woods for squirrels and or groundhogs and fast follow up shots (if needed). That top dot has been great out to about 30 to 40 yards. Perfect for quick shots on small game.
Going out past 100 yards with a .22lr is not a simple task. Learning your rifle and your distances takes practice and patience. I will say that at 150 we can reliably hit a 3” steel gong and all the way out at 275 we can reliably hit an 8” gong. The issue with .22 at distance will always be wind and bullet drop. So more testing (and practice) will ensure for future reviews on this setup. Until then we are solid at 100 yards all day long!
At the end of the day, shooting .22lr is fun, cheap to do all day long, and a great family activity!
Very nice brother
Outstanding build. I'm looking for it!
