Instead of focusing on actually having gear, and knowing how to effectively run it, FAR too many focus on the "brand"/"kind" of gear they have or others have.

I'm an admitted gear whore, but not a diva! I've worked with a few guys who were just starting out and they didn't know what would work but were budget minded. Who cares quite honestly, and we shouldn't be encouraging gear, but encouraging training and drills. We should encourage using gear and finding out what works and what doesn't. It's so easy in the days of Instagram and YouTube to get caught up in the marketing, brand names, cool photos or videos, but none of that means anything until you strap on what you have and hit the dirt. We don't need any gear-shaming in our community!

In EVERY vocation and avocation, there are “gear guys” who think spending X amount makes them something.

In the preparedness community, for those types even awesome surplus isn’t good enough; only Crye or Sitka or some hand-made boutique bs made from platypus hide will do.

Cretins.

I’ll bet you’re not an @$$ about it if you meet someone wearing m81 woodland camo, though…

First class I took that was of the "fighting rifle" variety was with a Chinese SKS, and some random pouches I ziptied onto ALICE. In fairness, I was 100% at a disadvantage to the guys running ARs and better pouches. I took some shit but soldiered through...and learned a ton. Don't be afraid to train in less than optimal gear - if nothing else, it will disabuse you of some things. I still occasionally run that SKS and my AK47 in classes, just to stay current on those platforms.

Just to be contrarian, the US Marines and Soldiers have overwhelmingly kicked the shit out of everyone they have faced in battle since WWII. Part of that was indeed the superior gear and tech. Our "losses" can all be laid squarely at the feet of politicians, not the generals or warfighters. None of those flip-flop wearing peasants won decisive battles against us, and they paid at an insane ratio in bodies.
